The Travelling Mathematician
Mathematics is often imagined as a quiet activity, hidden behind blackboards and formulas. The Travelling Mathematician shows a very different reality: the life of a mathematician as a journey across continents, cultures, and ideas.
In this book, we follow a mathematician on his travels around the world. Conferences and meetings take him to places where colleagues gather to discuss their science, test ideas, make decisions, and forge new collaborations. But between the formulas, applications, lectures and discussions, another story unfolds: that of cities and landscapes, history and culture, local cuisine, special encounters and long conversations at restaurant tables. The book also contains personal impressions of the places visited — remarkable restaurants, unexpected discoveries, and small excursions into the history and culture of the regions.
The book also has a special history of its own. The idea for The Travelling Mathematician was originally suggested by the author to the Sicilian mathematician Marcello Anile, a colleague and friend known for his warmth, his hospitality, and his remarkable ability to bring people together. Marcello loved travelling to conferences, and he had an extraordinary talent for telling stories about the places he visited — their history, their culture, and their cuisine. Because of this gift for storytelling, the author once suggested to him that he should write a book about these journeys — a book that would show the world of mathematics not only through formulas and lectures, but also through the experiences, encounters and places that shape a life in science. The title was already clear: The Travelling Mathematician.
Marcello loved the idea, but fate intervened. He fell seriously ill and passed away in 2007 before he could write the book. This book was therefore written by the author in the spirit Marcello would certainly have embraced: mathematics not only as an abstract discipline, but as part of a rich human life shaped by curiosity, travel, and friendship. The result is a mosaic of journeys, encounters and experiences in which mathematics is ever-present — not as an abstract discipline, but as a connecting force between people.
